South Shields Seafront Interpretation Project

<<< back

'The South Shields SandPaper' exists to further understanding and connection with the grainier side of the Foreshore at South Shields. Apart from the direct enjoyment of the beach the life of the sand is almost entirely overlooked by visitors and locals alike.' The SandPaper' provides a voice for the sand; a voice that reverberates through time.

Some of what the voice tells of is the seamier side of the beach, at other times it lauds its glories.' The SandPaper' sits outside chronology by mixing historical evidence with local authority visioning documents and current observations. This isn't designed to confuse the reader but more to help them access the wealth of information.

The idea for 'The SandPaper' started with the obvious play on words – its focus is the sand but maybe it could be a little bit abrasive as well. The content has (and will continue to be) thoroughly researched using online resources, the Local Studies Centre, conversations with local people and other documentary evidence. Quotes are frequently real but have lost the burden of history.
