balance/flow - Digbeth Coach Station, Birmingham
This part of Birmingham has a rich (and sometimes pungent) history. The presence of tanneries and tentering yards in the early days gave way to the heavier industry of stilliard production which became more focused with the establishment of an early incarnation of WT Avery in the earlier part of the 1800s.
It was on this site that the weighing apparatus manufacturer Avery transformed itself from a regional company into an international name. By the time the works building burnt down in 1899 the business had almost completed its relocation to Smethwick.
The site remained derelict for a few years before entering its present connection with the bus and coach industry when in 1825 it was acquired by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited. Since then despite some hard times the site has been crucial in Birmingham's transport history. Download an outline timeline of the site (pdf 24kb).
