Where are we? Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton Central. Map consulted, out of the main entrance and down to the canal - the Birmingham Main Line (waterway not iron way). The watery sun is burning off the cloud, there is a hum of machinery and traffic but it is surprisingly calm down here, you can hear the water flowing through the lock spillway and the bird song interrogates the urban wanderer.

Under Wolverhampton Railway Bridge to turn towards a burnt-out brewery skyline seen over a foreground of ruderal delights - sallow and primroses (further along there are cowslips too). A train horn - Cross Country Trains. Graffiti on the towpath alludes to virulence among the local daubers. The groundworks for the new development come right up to the canal here, but what became of the Boat Inn (still there in 1889 apparently)?

A Canada goose occupies the towpath (isn't the Coors Co. Canadian?). Further, the sun warming now, a step-up to view the corporate graffiti and then we are at Cannock Road Bridge. Levelling off, levelling out, the bastions of the security fence guard the tin cans and magpies.
