Object number RLS 22 as Sainsbury Centre, Norwich is a 1954 still life by the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi. Whilst passing some time studying this painting, I started to wonder how it might sound and this line of thought inevitably opened up further questions … am I wondering how the painted object in the gallery space might sound, or is it an attempt to sound the content of the painting? Could the painted space be seen (heard) as a landscape? What might the soundtrack of Morandi’s painting of the canvas have been … was he listening to music, were there noises from the street outside, how did the brushes sound as they moved over the canvas? What do those utterly ordinary yet enigmatic vessels sound like?
una natura morta per gli orecchi is an album of soundworks hosted on Bandcamp that will grow over time as I experiment with different ways of exploring Morandi’s painting and the questions it raises.
